GDAs were originally developed by the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) in 1998 and have been used for some years by a number of retailers and manufacturers.

The GDAs ad hoc working group on GDAs was mandated by the FCPC to develop GDAs that can be used in a consistent way across the European food industry on a voluntary basis. The process undertaken by the ad hoc group included a review of national and international scientific evidence and dietary recommendations.
